There are no federal laws governing the use of facial-recognition technology, which has led states, cities, and counties to regulate it on their own in various ways, particularly when it comes to how law enforcement agencies can use it. ![]() And in California, a law that went into effect in 2020 that temporarily forbid state and local law enforcement from using facial-recognition software in body cameras expires at the end of the year (it was enacted as a three-year rule, and an effort to make it permanent failed in the state’s senate).Īn image created by an AI system called Imagen, built by Google. The minutes of a hearing held on March 17 in a Chicago federal court revealed that Clearview AI was “considering selling the app platform to other entities,” and that the “sale of Clearview’s app” would be discussed in detail later. Refuting reports that emerged from a recent court filing and said Clearview was being sold, Clearview co-founder and CEO Hoan Ton-That told AP: “We don’t have any plans to sell the company.” Co-founder and CEO Hoan Ton-That trashed reports that Clearview AI, his controversial startup, was up for sale.Ĭlearview AI, the facial recognition startup that has often been in the cross-hairs of privacy advocates, intends to branch out beyond its beat of law enforcement and governments to banks and other private businesses, and is not looking to sell itself. ![]()
